Blue Meanies are small, slender, dung-loving tropical mushrooms characterized by thin grayish-white caps, jet-black spore prints, and a rapid, intense blue bruising whenever the flesh is handled or damaged.
In nature, the true Blue Meanie (Panaeolus cyanescens) features a smooth, convex-to-bell-shaped cap spanning 1.5 to 4 centimeters wide. The cap starts light brown when young and fades to an off-white or light gray hue as it matures. It sits atop a fragile, hollow stem that reaches 6 to 12 centimeters in length. Its gills on the underside are closely packed and transition from gray to a mottled black as its spores develop. The defining trait of this mushroom is its exceptionally high concentration of psilocin, which causes the entire fruiting body to oxidize into a distinct, deep cyan-blue color within moments of being touched.
