Edibles are a broad category of food products including gummies, baked goods, beverages, and mints used to ingest active cannabinoids or botanicals without inhaling smoke or vapor.
Edibles provide an alternative ingestion method that avoids the respiratory risks of smoking. When a cannabis edible is consumed, the THC does not enter the bloodstream immediately. Instead, it travels to the stomach and passes into the liver. The liver metabolizes Delta-9-THC into a compound called 11-Hydroxy-THC. This metabolized compound is significantly more potent, crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily, and produces a much more intense, deeply physical, and long-lasting psychological experience than inhaled cannabis. Edibles require careful commercial manufacturing to ensure that the active oil is evenly emulsified, preventing "hot spots" where one piece contains a dangerously high dose.
